Is this your first film role?

I have been in several short films but this is my first feature film.

What character do you play? Tell us a bit about him.

TJ (Terry James). His arrival in the film is pivotal to the plot, and continues to influence the actions of Metu (Okey Bakassi) for the remainder of the film. I don’t want to give too much away but it is fair to say that he may not always have acted within the law.

What made you want to audition for ONYE OZI (The Messenger)?

The chance to be in a proper feature film. It was an open audition and I fitted the brief for the part.

What was the initial reaction from family and friends when you told them that you will be involved in the first ever Igbo language film in London?

They were Intrigued and amazed at how I would get on.

How different did it feel for you to act in a Igbo language film in comparison to English? Was it easier or harder, considering you had to learn the script in Igbo, etc?

This was the most challenging part. I had to learn the “tune” of the lines and not just the syllables but I was still able to portray TJ’s feelings. The most difficulty was following the lines of others so that I could respond appropriately. Obi and Okey were both extremely helpful and patient.

What do you wish for the outcome of ONYE OZI (The Messenger)?

It deserves to be very successful and not just because of all the hard work. It has been made with dedication to the craft of film making and to promote the Igbo language. I hope it will be well supported at the premier in London and online and then again in Nigeria.

Any final comments ?

I have really enjoyed working on this film which, being in Igbo, took me out of my comfort zone. Obi Emelonye showed great faith in casting me and I hope that I have justified that faith sufficiently to work with him again in the future.
