A prisoner presented by the Nigerian military as a fighter for the Boko Haram terrorist network says extremists from neighboring Chad, Niger and Cameroon fight in the Islamic uprising in the country’s northeast.
His account confirms reports from survivors of attacks and reinforces fears that what once was a machete-wielding gang now poses a serious threat to Nigeria’s security and may be forming alliances with other radical groups affiliated to al-Qaida.
The prisoner said he was forced to join Boko Haram but added the movement has many willing and educated members including doctors, mechanics, butchers, security experts and weapons instructors.
The prisoner presented to journalists Friday night refused to give his name fearing extremists would target his family.
He said many fighters want to abandon Boko Haram but are afraid.
