The All Progressives Congress on Friday condemned the arrest and continued detention of one of the party’s leaders in Edo State, Mr. Joe Okojie.

The party said his continued detention was even after a court of competent jurisdiction had issued an order for his release.

In a statement issued in Lagos by the party’s Interim National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the party demanded Okojie’s immediate and unconditional release in compliance with the court order.

The party also raised the alarm over speculations of plans to transfer Okojie from detention in Edo to Abuja.

According to the statement, transferring him to Abuja, as being speculated, “will signal that the PDP government has finally decided to substitute the rule of law with arbitrary rule, with grave prognosis for the nation’s democracy.”

The statement said, “The APC wondered why the police, created to enforce the law and protect lives and property, will be so be comfortable violating the same law.

“Okojie was arrested, along with other party members by CSP Patrick Ejedawe, a serving police officer in Lagos State, who was one of the over 1,000 out-of-town policemen who were drafted to Esan North East LGA of Edo State for the October 22 election in the council.

“He was alleged to have arranged for party members to steal ballot papers and thumb print same secretly, when in fact he was called to help secure the release of APC members who were hounded into a truck by the police for not having ID cards.”
