White House Recognizes Rights for Same-Sex Spouses

The Department of Defense (DoD) announced that it would institute a series of changes that would extend same-sex spouses equal privileges and rights that heterosexual couples are awarded.

According to NBC News, these opportunities will extend to housing benefits, alongside family separation allowances and healthcare schemes. These payments will be retroactively issued, from as far back as June 26, 2013; this coincides with the Supreme Court’s landmark ruling, which clearly outlined the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) as unconstitutional, infringing upon other people’s liberties.

The pentagon released the following statement, this Wednesday:

“The Department of Defense remains committed to ensuring that all men and women who serve in the U.S. military, and their families, are treated fairly and equally as the law directs.”

However, in regions where same-sex marriage is yet to be legalized (which currently constitutes 37 American states), the military personnel will be granted up to ten days absence; this is to provide the members opportunity to travel to one of the distant states that embraces same-sex marriage licenses.
