 Nobel Peace Prize Winner Tawakul Karman Turned Away from Cairo Airport

Tawakul Karman, a Nobel Peace Prize Winner was turned away on Sunday at Cairo’s Airport on Sunday. Her intention was to join the protest against the military coup that toppled President Mohamed Morsi. Karman was sent back to the United Arab Emirates according to various news accounts. The protest which is lasting two months already, the government said that it will underline it by resolving it in dealing with the protest.

The BBC could not confirm why Karman was denied entry to Cairo. A claim made by the Mena state news agency referred it as her “Solidarity with supporters of the deposed Egyptian President.

On 03rd July after massive demonstrations led by secular-leaning Egyptians was ousted by the first democratically elected president Morsi. Morsi an Islamist affiliated with the Muslim brotherhood, has been held in detention, and his supporters have been at the Cairo Mosque ever since.

Karman tweeted about her treatment at the Cairo Airport on her arrival:

And:

After a one-hour detention, Tawakkol karman was denied entry to #Cairo by the Egyptian security.

Dubai-based Gulf news said Karman “has repeatedly lashed out at Egypt’s military and expressed solidarity with Morsi’s supporters since his overthrow on July 3rd.

Karman played a key role in the “Arab Spring” uprising in Yemen that led to the overthrow of the government of Zine El Abidine Ben Ali in January 2011. She was honoured that year by the Nobel Committee along with Ellen Johnson Sirleaf and Leymah Gbowee of Liberia.
