Lagos State Government Warns Residents On Ocean Surge

Lagos alerts on ocean surge in Lekki beaches

The Lagos State Government yesterday alerted its residents on ocean surges in Lekki beaches, saying danger looms in the beaches and their environs. The General Manager/CEO, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, (LASEMA), Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu who disclosed this to journalists, warned Lagosians to be safety cautious and stay away from the affected areas, especially Lekki beach, Alpha beach and Elegushi Beach.

He said accidents and emergencies that occurred, during period such as this, were caused by nonchalant attitude and carelessness of the people during holiday celebrations, urging fun seekers not to go near the beaches to avert disaster.

According to him, “For now, those residing along the shore should stay off. Those who are close to the sea can confirm that there are times the tidal waves are on the increase but the truth is that scientifically, things are changing.

“Those, who leave around Lekki, Alpha and Elugushi beaches should vacate the area now because of the likely wood of the surge which can lead to severe flooding,” the LASEMA boss said. Osayintolu urged parents and guardians to keep a close watch on the movement of their wards, even as he warned motorists to be safety conscious while driving.

He said LASEMA, Lagos State Fire and Safety Service, state Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS), state Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Nigeria Police and other agencies that were important in the management of emergencies in the state had been put on red alert to secure and protect the lives and property of the people leaving and doing business in the state.

He also warned people who were in the habit of sending false alarm to the emergency call centre and also through the social networks, thereby creating panic and unnecessary tension across the state to desist from doing so this holiday period.
