Lagos Fashion Week Kicks Off Today.

Nigeria’s biggest city from Wednesday hosts the second Lagos Fashion Week, which organisers say will showcase local design talent and add a splash of colour, the event, which is to go on till March 11, would see participation of 77 fashion designers.

Amongst those participating in the week-long event are Buki Akib, a knitwear designer hailing from Nigeria, who passed-out from the prestigious Central Saint in London; Lisa Folawiyo, the brain behind Jewel by Lisa; and LDA, which marked its entry in the fashion industry with iconic 1940s signature apparel designs, in 2005.

Frank Osodi, Virgos Lounge, Tiffany Amber, Paul Herve and Mustafa Hassanali are some other names who will present their creations at the AMFW 2012.
Likewise, fashion duo Malcom Kluk and Christiaan Gabriel du Toit, who teamed up to create Kulk CGDT in 2005; David Saunders, founder of London-based David David; and Gavin Raja, a fashion and marketing entrepreneur who is quite popular in South Africa, would also showcase their latest designs.

Ozwald Boateng, an international fashion designer from the UK, would also be among those displaying their latest creations.

Boateng, of Ghanaian descent, unveiled his first outlet on Savile Row at the young age of 23. Then in 1991, he launched his first studio on Portobello Road, and in 1994 he became the first tailor to have presented the catwalk at Paris Fashion Week.

“There’s a lot of negativity about Africa in general and Nigeria in particular,” Penny McDonald, managing director of Arise Media, which is organising the event, told AFP on the eve of the opening day.

“The world needs to see Africa showcase its own fashion,” said McDonald.
