Tragedy struck the people of Iri village, in Rijau Local Government area of Niger State, as a 20-year–old man, by name Usman Bege, butchered his 18-year-old wife, Hauwa, after having a little misunderstanding, the case is being remanded in the custody of the state command of the Nigerian Prison Service.
It happened that after the face-off with the accused, Hauwa allegedly packed her belongings and relocated to her parents’ residence, but Bege sneaked into the in-laws’ house when the ill-fated housewife was fast asleep in the night and allegedly slashed her throat, before he could bolt away from the scene, some villagers got hold of him and handed him over to the village head, by name Alhaji Usman, who formally complained to the police about the unfortunate incident.
The accused was, however, arraigned before the Chief Magistrate Court III, Minna, the Niger State capital, for culpable homicide, and he pleaded guilty to the offence, saying, “I cut her with a knife.” The presiding magistrate, ordered that the accused be remanded in prison custody and adjourned the case to July 26 2012.
