Bodybuilder Bitten By False Widow Spider Two Years Ago still Suffering Serious Reactions.

A bodybuilder who was bitten by false widow spider TWO YEARS ago says it is still causing him health problems.

Since being bitten two years ago, Gary Meadows has suffered regular and serious reactions to insect bites and been back in hospital four times.

Just last Friday the 34-year-old was treated at James Cook University Hospital in Middles brought after a midge bit him on his chest.

And four weeks earlier, he went to A & E after being bitten by a red mite.

He said: “My immune system is shot, basically, and when I’m bitten I blow up like that girl off Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

Gary was weeding his allotment when the false widow spider struck back in 2011.

His hand and arm swelled up “like a boxing glove” and he went to hospital where doctors warned they might have to amputate his arm.

“I told them ‘You can’t take my arm off, I work, I go to the gym five times a week, I go swimming and fishing.’

“They told me they would have to cut out part of my arm and I would left with a really big scar, but it was either that or lose my arm.”

After the affected flesh had been removed, Gary had a skin graft taken from his leg to cover the gaping wound and was left with a permanent scar.

He was off work recovering for seven months.

“Ironically, before I was bitten by the spider, I lived in Australia for six months and saw huntsman spiders, red widows, swam with crocodiles and sharks and never had anything bad happen to me,”.

“But I come back home and I’m bitten by a spider in my back garden and all of this happens to me.”
