Michael Essien returned to Accra Sunday to begin preparations for the final playoff game of the 2014 World Cup with Ghana. But he was greeted by bad news. His dad, James Essien, died in the night. The player has confirmed the news on his Twitter account: “It is difficult, but God always does things well. Thank you for support. Rest in Peace Father “.
Minutes after, the official Chelsea Twitter handle also announced the death; ‘Everybody at Chelsea FC is saddened to hear of the passing of Michael Essien’s dad. Our thoughts are with him‘.
Essien returned to Chelsea after a one-year lone deal with Real Madrid.
He is part of a 26-man squad called up by Black Stars coach Kwesi Appiah for the match against Zambia. He is also expected to play in an international friendly against Japan on September 10.
