Jay Z and Mark Zuckerberg
Jay Z has done it again : Thursday at noon he exclusively released, for the first time, his new video, “Holy Grail.” This shrewd business man didn’t go through HBO, MTV, BET or any of the usual venues. Instead he struck a deal with Mark Zuckerberg to premiere his video on FaceBook.
The music mogul decided that his FaceBook page would be the perfect platform for Holy Grail which features Justin Timberlake on his Magna Carta Album. He has more than 17 million fans on his page so why not give the fans the first view. For 24-hous it will be exclusive to FaceBook.
Sean Carter, The 42-year-old music and business mogul, made a special trip to see Zuckerberg so that he could set the deal up. Zuckerberg and Jay Z informed the FaceBook team of their plans and began putting things in motion.
The video was the first ever social media release from any star of his caliber. By combining Jay Z’s fans with Timberlake’s 25 million fans this turned into a huge release party. According to the head of content partnerships, Nick Grudin, what FaceBook did with Jay Z is monumental. He goes on to say, “What we’re doing with Jay Z today is really exciting and we think symbolic of the evolution for music. It’s an innovative way for musicians to reach out and connect with their fans who constantly support them. He says by using this method it gives him the key to a direct yet massive audience.”
Jay Z has loves to think outside of the box. This is just what he did with this whole music project. He connected with Samsung and made the deal for them to purchase 1 million pre-released copies. The selling point was anyone who bought the new phone would be able to download the album for free; before anyone else. This kind of thinking caused “Holy Grail” to reach platinum status before the project was even released.
Like him or not, Jay Z is a businessman who is wise and very strategic. No doubt he just set a new prescient for other artist. “Holy Grail” will always be the first but it surely won’t be the last.
