Bush Spokesman Apologises For “Stupid” Nelson Mandela Mistake

George H.W. Bush spokesman Jim McGrath apologized on Sunday after what he called a “stupid mistake” led him to issue a statement on the death of Nelson Mandela.

McGrath explained on Twitter that he misread the headline of a Washington Post email alert Sunday morning reporting the 95-year-old former South African president and anti-apartheid icon had been discharged from a hospital. Thinking he was hours behind the news, McGrath said in an interview with the Post that he rushed out the statement, which Bush’s office had prepared several weeks earlier.

“I apologize, because I know I put a lot of people into a modestly stressful position, which is never my intent for my friends in the media,” McGrath told the Post. “So I’m sorry about that. A massive egg on my face.”

Mandela was discharged from a hospital in the capital, Pretoria, where he had been since June 8 for what South Africa’s presidency described as a recurring lung infection, and will receive intensive care at his Johannesburg home. President Jacob Zuma said in a statement Sunday that Mandela’s condition, still listed as critical, “is at times unstable.”
