Angelina Jolie Receives the Hersholt Honorary Oscar Award

The Academy Awards aka Oscars may still be months ahead but some winners have already been identified. According to reports, prolific actress and Forbes Magazine’s Most Powerful Actress in Hollywood,Angelina Jolie will receive the prestigious Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award, which the body behind the Oscars, Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) says is presented “to an individual in the motion picture industry whose humanitarian efforts have brought credit to the industry.”

In a press release from AMPAS, Angelina was cited as “an impassioned advocate for humanitarian causes, traveling widely to promote organizations and social justice efforts such as the Prevent Sexual Violence Initiative.”

Angelina is widely known for her humanitarian efforts and continuously travels the world for her various charity projects including her work with the Council on Foreign Relations and the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. In 2003, Angelina adopted her first child Maddox from an orphanage in Cambodia, her second child Zahara Marley was also adopted from an orphanage in Ethiopia and in 2007, Angelina Jolie adopted another son from Vietnam. After the birth of her three children; daughter Shiloh Nouvel and twins Knox and Vivienne, Angelina Jolie and partner Brad Pitt sold the pictures of their newborns for a whopping $4.1 million (for North American rights), $3.5 million (for the British rights) and $14 million respectively. Pax‘s post-adoption image was also sold for $2million with all of the monies donated to charity.

Asides from her personal life, Angela also displays her humanitarian streak in her career having starred in movies like “A Mighty Heart” and directing “In The Land of Blood and Honey.”

Angelina will be the youngest person ever to receive the Jean Hersholt Award; the previous record holder was a screenwriter, director, and producer George Seaton, who was 51 when he was given the prize in 1962. Other honourees include actors Steve Martin and Angela Lansbury who will receive lifetime achievement honors as well as costume designer Piero Tosi. The awards will be presented at a special ceremony at Hollywood’s Ray Dolby Ballroom on Saturday, November 16, 2013.
