Usain Bolt Wins Again: Who Will Stop This Man?

Usain Bolt Wins Again

Usain Bolt Wins Again

Jamaican runner Usain Bolt became the most medaled athlete in the history of the World Championships of Athletics by winning 3 gold medals.  Bolt, 26, won the 200 m in 19.66 seconds, setting a new world record.  Bolt commented,” The 200m is my favourite event so this victory is very important to me.” Bolt won despite concern that his foot was injured earlier this week after he dropped a starting block on it.

Bolt had already won the 100 m and he also won the 4×100 meter relay.  Bolt was lagging behind US runner, Justin Gatlin, when he was passed the baton, but a problem with the US pass coupled with Bolt’s speed were enough to earn him and Jamaica the win.  Once he crossed the finish line, Bolt took off his running shoes and threw them into the stands, striking his trademark lightning bolt pose, as Bob Marley’s “Three Little Birds” started to play.

By winning all three events, Bolt has repeated a feat that he first accomplished at the Olympics.  He has won all three sprinting events.

Usain Bolt, who was born in the small town of Trelawny, Jamaica, has been wowing the world since 2004 when he turned pro and became the first junior to run the 200 meter in under 20 seconds actually setting a world junior record at 19.93 seconds.  In 2008 Bolt set a new world record for the 100 meters by running it in 9.72 seconds at the Reebok Grand Prix in New York City.  Bolt went on to win gold at the Beijing Olympics in the 100 and 200 meters.  At the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, Bolt again set the world record for the 100 meter with a time of 9.63 seconds and he won the 200 meters with a time of 19.32 seconds.

Usain Bolt now holds eight World Championship medals: three gold medals from the 2009 World Championship games that were held in Berlin, two gold medals from the 2011 World Championship games that were held in Daegu, South Korea, three gold medals from today’s World Championships in Moscow, in addition to two silver medals that he won at the 2007 World Championship games in Osaka.  Bolt also holds six gold Olympic medals.

Bolt is now tied with Carl Lewis in the competition of who has the most championship medals. Lewis won three gold medals at the 1983 World Championship games that were held in Helsinki.  Lewis also won 3 gold medals at the 1987 World Championship games in Rome, two gold medals at the 1991 World Championship games in Tokyo and one silver medal.  Lewis also won a bronze medal in the 1993 World Championship games in Stuttgart.

Usain Bolt is enjoying being compared to the legendary Lewis, It is just great. I’ll continue dominating. I’ll continue to work hard. For me, my aim is to continue hard into the greatness thing.”

The World Championships in Athletics are organized by the International Association of Athletic Federations (IAAF) and take place every four years.  The 2013 games took place in Russia at Luzhniki Stadium.
