Court Remands Woman For Allegedly Running Unlawful Orphanage

An Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court on Friday remanded 55-year-old Rose Nwachukwu in police custody for allegedly running an unlawful orphanage. The Chief Magistrate,  Eniola Fabamwo, said the accused should be kept in police custody pending the trial of the case at the Family Court.  She said:“No such offence is prescribed under Section 183 of the Criminal Law.

“The defendant should be remanded in police custody pending when the prosecution will put their house in order, and appropriate hearing fixed for the Family Court.’’

Nwachukwu, a resident of No. 30/32, Prince Adebambo St., Egbeda, a Lagos suburb, is standing trial on a charge of running an unlawful orphanage.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Lagos State Government had on Thursday announced that it had rescued 25 children from a suspected child trafficker in Egbeda.

The Prosecutor, ASP Barth Nwaokoye, said the accused committed the offence at her residence on Aug. 17.

He said the accused unlawfully kept in her custody 27 children of different ages without authorisation by law under the guise of running an orphanage.

The offence, Nwaokoye noted, contravened Section 183 of the Child Rights Law of Lagos State, 2007.

The case was adjourned to Aug. 26 for mention. (NAN)
