Should Couples Reveal Their Financial Information To Each Other?

Secret stashes, buried bills, money not being accounted for and general lies… all these are things that come up in relationships when couples are faced with the issue of ‘whether or not to reveal financial information to themselves.

A woman noticed after four years of being married to her husband that he was too relaxed when it came to paying the bills or paying for anything that had to do with the general house hold. Initially, she didn’t mind doing it because she was getting paid handsomely at work and could afford it. What raised an alarm in her head was when she started noticing some unexplained bank withdrawals from her account. Her husband, she later discovered was pulling out cash whichever way he liked since she was earning more than him and felt she should cater for the home expenses. This then brings the question of how open should spouses be about their finances?

Financial infidelity has most couples have called it has to do with partners who are dishonest about their financial information. This can destroy a relationship as it brings about trust issues which can later spread to other aspects of the relationship. Research done by Essence discovered that most married women have secret savings which they keep from their husbands. Is this right? Could it be because these women don’t trust their husbands with the truth or think their husbands cannot be relied on 100%?

A divorce attorney, Michelle said that at the heart of any financial deceit is a lack of trust and effective communication and maybe some other type of betrayal. A married woman who sees nothing wrong in her keeping her true financial standing from her husband said;

if we were to part ways, I don’t need to wait to get some money from him or face any family drama if anything should happen to him.

Another woman said;

I will ask him for money every time because he doesn’t need to know that i have money or that I don’t need him to give me money. I don’t ever want him to know.

The second woman said her husband started complaining about her not depending on him financially and became suspicious of her, claiming she might have someone else taking care of her! What do you think of this? Truly, some men believe that it is their duty to take care of the woman and the family. But what if she earns more than him?

Another relationship expert said that there is nothing wrong with both spouses having personal savings as long as they both know it is there. She believes that it’s the secrecy that adds vile to the relationship. This is ideal and each person can spend from the personal stash as he or she deems fit. Having a joint account where they both deposit money in on a regular basis is another way to go. They can do this based on how much each person earns. Both spouses would therefore be contributing equally to the upkeep of the house.

Couples who are serious about spending the rest of their lives together should talk about their finances. Talking about money in a relationship is as important as talking about your sexual health! At the right time, both parties should sit down and discuss the issue of money. This would help you avoid any awkward situation as time goes by in the marriage. Another way to know more about your partner’s financial life is to listen when he/she talks about money and expenditures. Does he spend impulsively? Is she stingy with other members of her family or borrows a lot? e.t.c. These are some things you should take note of.

Other things to discuss with the partner you are serious with includes their long term financial plan. Do they just spend as they get or have things they want to invest in? Your partner’s financial weakness and how you can help them overcome it or build around it is another thing t discuss. Lastly, how open do you want to be about your finances? Remember your partner is someone you should be able to trust completely if not why are you with the person? Trust is very important  in a relationship and trust in your finances is equally important.
