Minister of State for Health Muhammed Ali Pate has resigned and is taking up a professorial appointment with Duke University’s Global Health Institute in the United States. His resignation letter dated July 22, but effective from yesterday has been accepted by President Goodluck Jonathan.
Pate said in his new capacity, he will participate in a university-wide Africa initiative and serve as Senior Adviser to Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation based in Washington DC.He, however, offered to continue his service on part-time basis as the chairman of the Presidential Task Force on Polio Eradication and the Public-Private Coalition for Saving One Million Lives Initiative.
He wrote: “As we have discussed, I wish to offer the continuation of my service on part-time basis as chairman of the Presidential Task Force on Polio Eradication and the Public-Private Coalition for Saving One Million Lives Initiative. This may entail an honorary advisory role reporting directly to you progress, at least, on quarterly basis”.
Presidential spokesman Reuben Abati later told State House correspondents in Abuja yesterday that in accepting Pate’s resignation, Jonathan was highly elated that his star-studded cabinet was attracting required global attention.
He said the president accepted Pate’s offer to continue to serve on a part-time basis as honorary adviser.
