Psy, the current king holder of the most watched video on ‘Youtube’ admitted to a stunning weakness to UK’s ‘Sunday Times’ magazine, “If I’m happy, I’m drinking, if I’m sad, I’m drinking. If it’s raining, I’m drinking, if it’s sunny, I’m drinking.” Admitting to the interviewer, Psy stated he only stops drinking when he feels hungover. A sad admission of alcoholism from a public favorite.

In addition, the interviewer leaked that Psy shared he had stemmed from a home with an abusive father that would beat him, “all of the time.” Psy was born as Park Jae-Sang in South Korea. The future star enrolled himself at the Boston based Berklee College of Music in 1997. The singer had shared he previously didn’t care to conform to classical training and instead rebelled against what was expected. He shared, “I started out as a hip-hop musician and listened to Eminem and Tupac a lot. I love their music, especially their lyrics.”

Psy shot to fame in the summer of 2012 when ‘Gangnam Style’ became one of the most downloaded videos in ‘Youtube’ history. The pop catchy beat and new dance move revolutionized the club scene nationally. In his own country, he faced criticism for previously released hits and the bluntness of his words. In America, he was embraced. From the appearances on ‘SNL’ and the ‘MTV Video Music Awards,’ one could never detect the strains of alcohol addiction and previous abuse, Psy endured.

Since its release, the video has seen over 1 billion hits and Psy has cashed in a cow of over $870,000 just in ‘Youtube’ earnings. Drug and alcohol addictions are a real and serious problem among singers and actors alike in Hollywood. Singers like Amy Winehouse, Billy Holiday, Brian Jones, Hank Williams Sr. and Jimi Hendrix have suffered a deadly fate when mixing alcohol into their lives in mass consumption.

Everything is good in moderation, including alcohol, once that level has been met and continues to be met, creates a tangible problem for individuals and families. Over 15,000 people die annually in the United States due to liver disease stemming from alcohol. Over 25,000 more die from alcohol related accidents. This is a stunning number that hopefully will show Psy that he needs to get help.

Beating an addiction can happen. ‘Ironman’ actor Robert Downey Jr. beat the odds of death from drugs and alcohol and now he continues to stun as a leading example of recovery and success. Robin Williams is another recovery story that spells success from a bad path of addiction. Beating the odds can be a path Psy can turn to and recover. He also has to be willing to want the help.

Psy is married to sweetheart Yoo Hye Yeon and has been the past seven years. The couple have two children; twin daughters who were born in 2007. The dance-craze creator is back in the studio for a new album slated for release in September of this year. Psy’s family is in Seoul and this may attribute to his addiction. Hopefully, the favorite singer will look for help to battle his childhood demons, defeat alcoholism and continue a long path of creating new dance sensations.
