Fashion has always been an intriguing subject matter. In the last five decades that I have been around, I have witnessed fashion trends that are laudable and many that are totally condemnable. In the last decade, however, there seem to be a steady descent into murkiness by fashion trends and fashion designers. It is either fashion artists have lost their way or they are totally bereft of common sense ideas.
The size of cloth used to design what we wear these days are becoming smaller and smaller. This is worse in the female fashion genre. The result is that the womenfolk in following modern or latest trends in fashion turn out half-clad and most times clearly naked.
It may be old-fashioned to consider that non-revealing clothes which is the standard of fashion in the past is the appropriate clothing. However, it is equally insane to see what our women are wearing these days as sensible fashion in any way.
The human body, male or female, is sacred. It naturally needs to be covered at all times. This is why is there clothing for cold weather and for hot weather. Meanwhile, given the alluring and enticing nature of the female body, it needs more covering than the one of a male.
All cultures of the world and at whatever time have always had clothes that are suitable for the different times and seasons for both male and female. This is what makes the vogue of the day where women wear skimpy; revealing clothing and trousers that are so tight that the fat of their laps and the contours of their vagina are clearly revealed for all, including those who do not want, to see. Women wear dresses so small that the breasts are handing out there for touts to play with to the embarrassment of decency and decent bystanders. How could we forget the saying that “we are addressed the way we dress”.
Are women deliberately shortchanging themselves with their wearing of spaghetti blouses where twenty year old women wear blouses that is the size of a four week old baby? The madness for females to wear trousers are all over the world now. Trousers are good on women. But the tight fitting trousers which reveal all and are also low on the waist certainly reveal a poor sense of self. To worsen the situation, upon the small tight fitting trouser is a skimpy four week old baby’s blouse on the body of a fat thirty something year old women. Probably knowing that she is naked, the women add another longer blouse tee-shirt which they keep dragging down to ensure that it covers the panties revealed by the low waist trousers.
In my experience, women are more beautiful when they are properly clothed. And the most beautiful woman ever does not really look as beautiful, naked. Is there a chance that nobody has given women this important information? The tight-fitting trousers and skimpy skirts and half-yard blouses show women in their ugliest. Where a good knee length skirt or gown would have hidden a knock-knee, these tight-fitting trousers and baby blouses reveal the fact that a woman is not as beautiful as her voice sounded or as she looked yesterday when she was in the time honoured female fashion.
The just concluded Africa Magic Viewers Choice Award, revealed how much it is wrong to wear nudity as fashion. Our own revered, loved and highly honoured Genevieve Nnaji appeared at the award night show with her breasts clearly sticking out for all to see. One of the commentators, in apparent disgust, asked her if she forgot to put on her bra. She was so embarrassed that she left the event and changed into a more decent gown and returned.
As I looked at Genevieve whose beauty and achievements against all odds have always enthralled me, I saw all my thoughts of her beauty fade away from my mind and heart. Instead of seeing a woman I have always adored, I saw something so poor and pitiable and some tinge of tears filled my eyes and a drop or two did fall to the ground.
Only the whores I see on Opebi/Allen/Toyin Roundabout area of Ikeja, Lagos and Port Harcourt Crescent, Area 11, Garki Abuja and other areas where they are located that I know to wear nudity as fashion. In other words, nudity is the fashion of prostitutes.
Some of the most important people of my life are my women made up of my mother, sisters, wife and daughters. They have my highest regards for human beings. This also translates to the women I encounter in my business and social life.
So when any woman starts wearing these skimpy dresses and contour revealing trousers, or when any woman start dressing like the prostitutes I see as I drive past the areas I mentioned earlier or any other areas they ply their trade in Nigeria and the world over, it makes it difficult for them to earn my respect.
Think about it.
